Hypersonic Flight Laboratory

Legacy Project

Project Scope

Caddell was responsible for the design/build of major upgrades and improvements to one of the military’s primary aerospace ground testing facilities. This conversion effort was required to enhance flight simulation conditions to reflect the new realities of advanced “hypersonic” missile and aircraft technology. Caddell made major modifications to a system of compressed air tanks, high-temperature/high-pressure burners that use liquid oxygen to superheat the air blast, water-cooling systems, and all associated instrumentation and controls. Caddell installed enhancements that increased test simulation capabilities with air pressures up to 2,800 pounds per square inch and temperatures of up to 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit—Mach 8 conditions.
