Power Systems Testing & Development Center

Project Scope

Caddell provided a wide range of equipment erection services for a unique, cutting-edge power systems development and testing facility developed through a partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy, the Southern Company, and various power industry equipment vendors. The sophisticated R&D complex explores new coal gasification technologies designed to increase the efficiency, cleanliness, and economic viability of coal-based power generation.

Caddell’s scope of work encompassed erection of Foster Wheeler pressurized fluidized bed combustion systems and auxiliaries, feed storage and preparation systems, ash disposal units, and the balance of plant materials and equipment. Key components included erection of a gas turbine with stack, a wide array of highly sophisticated and specialized diagnostic and monitoring equipment, exotic piping, state-of-the-art instrumentation and controls, and all associated materials handling and structural support systems.

Caddell met the challenge of working closely with design engineers, scientists, vendor power specialists, and other project participants to build a one-of-a-kind facility utilizing some of the most advanced technologies in the power industry. Southern Company Services has retained Caddell to remain onsite to make required calibrations and modifications to facility systems as directed by the scientific/engineering staff.
