Project Scope
Responding to the VA’s need for expanding patient services and their concerns regarding the site’s active seismic zone, Caddell added 320,000 SF of new floor space while installing systems to protect the medical complex from major earthquake damage. The phased project was performed while the existing facilities continued to provide patient care – requiring extremely close coordination among the engineer, VA professional staff, Owner, and the dozens of onsite subcontractors. Caddell installed state-of-the-art seismic protection upgrades primarily consisting of several thousand tons of concrete shear walls (averaging 14” thick) and over 4,000 tons of structural and reinforcing steel. Caddell also constructed a completely new six-story hospital addition as well as a new transformer and power generation building.
